Iran FM talks over phone with Russia, Egyptian, Qatari counterparts

TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has shared views on the latest regional and international developments regarding Iran’s nuclear talks with the United States in separate phone conversations with his opposite numbers from Russia, Egypt and Qatar.

Iran has been holding two rounds of nuclear talks with the U.S. in Oman and then Switzerland since early February with the mediation of the Omani foreign minister. The sides are expected to return to the talks after consultations with the top leaders.

In an interview with MS NOW aired on Friday, Araghchi said a draft of a potential nuclear agreement with the United States would be ready within days, signaling that a diplomatic resolution to the long-standing standoff may be within reach.

In an interview with MSNBC, Araghchi also described recent talks in Geneva as productive, saying both sides had agreed on a set of principles to guide negotiations. He said Iranian officials were now preparing a draft text to present to the U.S. negotiating team, led by Steve Witkoff.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in his phone call with Araqchi, said his country supports the course of negotiations to secure fair solutions and respect for Iran’s legitimate rights.

In his phone talk with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, the top Iranian diplomat touched upon the latest developments pertaining to indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, highlighting the need for efforts to draw up a draft agenda for the talks based on mutual respect and interests.

The top Egyptian diplomat, in turn, welcomed the continuation of the diplomatic trend, underlining the need to move forward with consultations with the aim of advancing the talks and achieving an acceptable framework for the relevant parties.

Araghchi and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani also exchanged views on the latest process of negotiations between Iran and the United States.

The two top diplomats further reviewed the newest regional and international developments.

During the call, both sides examined the most recent trend of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, calling for the continuation of consultations in a bid to facilitate and advance the path of diplomacy within the framework of regional cooperation.
